Indian Film Legend Kamal Haasan To Head FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee South

At the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) Media & Entertainment Business Conclave South Connect 2025 in Chennai, Indian screen legend Kamal Haasan was announced as the head of the organization's Media and Entertainment Committee South.

The two-day conference, inaugurated by Haasan alongside actor and Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, highlights the growing global impact of South Indian entertainment.

Stalin unveiled ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art film city in Chennai, spanning 152 acres. This facility will boast virtual production technologies, VFX studios, LED walls, and a five-star hotel. Additionally, the revival of a dormant land lease initiative from 2010 will enable the construction of residential complexes for film industry professionals on a 90-acre plot.

Haasan emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks that foster emerging technologies rather than hindering them. He also urged the Deputy CM to reconsider and reform the state entertainment tax on cinema.

JioStar Entertainment CEO Kevin Vaz, who chairs FICCI's Media and Entertainment Committee, highlighted the transformation of South India from a regional player to a global force, citing the success of recent box office hits such as "RRR" and "K.G.F: Chapter 2."

The conclave covers various sectors including television, streaming, gaming, animation, and VFX. A dedicated "PlayNext" segment focuses specifically on gaming and e-sports. Industry leaders in attendance include Meta's India head Sandhya Devanathan and Warner Bros. Discovery's South Asia chief Arjun Nohwar.

The event will take place on February 21-22, 2023.
