Tiger's Pond: Indian Film Making History at Berlin Film Festival

Natesh Hegde's sophomore feature, "Tiger's Pond" (Vagachipani), is poised to make history as the first Kannada-language film to grace the prestigious Forum strand of the Berlin Film Festival.

The brooding crime drama, internationally represented by Loco Films, boasts the backing of acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

Set in the enigmatic village of Vaghachipani, where a tiger god holds sway over a fallen world, the film follows a ruthless businessman's attempt to manipulate local elections. However, he faces unexpected resistance from an outcast villager. At its core lies Pathi, a mute maid whose presence probes the dynamics of power, faith, and caste in Southern India.

Hegde reveals that Pathi's character ignited the film's conception. "She represents humanity amidst the lust for power that surrounds her," he shares with Variety. "Her story aligns with global concerns about reducing individuals to numbers."

Hegde approaches the storytelling with a collaborative spirit. "I believe the audience and I co-create the film," he says. "I provide a sensory experience that taps into fundamental human emotions, offering a potentially cathartic experience."

Despite its specific setting, the film's themes resonate universally. "It's a human drama with crime elements," notes Hegde. "It's a fable that will connect with global audiences."

Shot on striking 16mm, capturing "rapturous textures and treacherous depths," the film features Dileesh Pothan, Achyut Kumar, Natesh Hegde, Gopal Hegde, and Sumitra. Kashyap, Jeremy Chua (Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell), and Ranjan Singh (Kennedy) collaborated on the project.

"It's an honest and thrilling story," says Kashyap. "Natesh's effortless storytelling transports viewers into the film's world."

For Hegde, whose debut feature "Pedro" garnered acclaim at Busan and London, the Berlin premiere is particularly significant. "It's an emotional moment for my village, who made this film possible," he expresses.

"Tiger's Pond" embarked on its journey at Busan's Asian Project Market in 2022, buoyed by the success of "Pedro," which won Hegde Best Director at Pingyao and Best Film at the Nantes Three Continents Festival. Actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty played a pivotal role in getting the film off the ground.

Co-producer Singh expresses excitement for the film's global journey. "We believe it will resonate with audiences worldwide."

Making its world premiere at Berlin on February 15, "Tiger's Pond" marks a watershed moment for Kannada-language cinema on the international stage.
