Channing Tatum Surprises Sundance with Cameo in 'Atropia'

Tatum steals the scene in Hailey Gates' directorial debut, which depicts the fabricated villages on U.S. military bases used to prepare troops for the Iraq War. Tatum plays a conceited A-lister seeking authenticity alongside real soldiers. Alia Shawkat, who stars in the film, revealed she personally invited Tatum for the cameo and experienced some suspense before his confirmation. Gates, the director, researched training camps for years before crafting the narrative, inspired by her friend and producer, Luca Guadagnino.
