Romería: Carla Simón Explores Family in Berlinale Contender

MK2 Films reunites with Carla Simón, director of the Berlinale Golden Bear-winning "Alcarràs," for her follow-up film, "Romería."

Simón's third feature, "Romería," continues her trilogy exploring family. Drawing inspiration from her own life, the film centers on Marina, an 18-year-old orphan traveling to Spain's Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time.

As Marina navigates her newfound family, she confronts a past shaped by loss and long-suppressed emotions. The film pays homage to Simón's parents, who both succumbed to AIDS-related illnesses during her childhood. MK2 Films will showcase a promo and script to buyers in Berlin.

"Carla Simón's ability to portray personal stories with warmth and genuineness has solidified her as a captivating voice in contemporary cinema," said Fionnuala Jamison, MK2 Films' managing director. "With 'Romería,' she brings her distinctive style to a new chapter, sensitively delving into the echoes of love, loss, and the unspoken currents that shape every family's narrative."

A Spanish-German co-production, "Romería" is produced by María Zamora at Elastica Films (Spain) alongside co-producers Olimpia Pont-Cháfer at Ventall Cinema (Germany) and Àngels Masclans at DosSoles Media. Elastica Films will distribute the film in Spain.

MK2 Films has collaborated with Elastica Films on award-winning titles such as Justine Triet's Oscar-nominated "Anatomy of a Fall" and "The Worst Person in the World."
