Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play "English" Debuts on Broadway

Playwright Sanaz Toossi's "English" premiered on Broadway shortly after Donald Trump took office for the second time, highlighting the play's relevance to contemporary political events.

Inspired by the Muslim travel ban and Toossi's personal experiences, "English" follows adult students preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Marjan Neshat, Toossi's close friend and collaborator, stars as the teacher.

Despite its serious subject matter, "English" is primarily a comedy, aiming to connect with audiences and open them to discussions about immigration and identity. The play's Broadway debut adds an extra layer of significance, emphasizing the importance of representing and humanizing immigrant experiences.

In an interview on Variety's "Stagecraft" podcast, Toossi and Neshat delve into audience reactions to the play, particularly the final 30 seconds performed in Farsi. Neshat also highlights Toossi's exceptional work ethic, evident in her writing even during rehearsals.
