Russell Crowe to Star in Action Thriller 'Bear Country' in Queensland
Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe will return to Queensland, Australia, for the action thriller "Bear Country." Production is scheduled to commence in February, as announced by Screen Queensland.
The film reunites Crowe with "Unhinged" director Derrick Borte, who will helm the project from a script co-written with Daniel Forte, adapted from Thomas Perry's novel "Strip."
Crowe portrays Manco Kapak, a club owner whose plans for retirement are shattered when his establishment is robbed.
"Bear Country" carries an estimated economic impact of AUD11.9 million ($7.4 million) for Queensland, and approximately 95 local workers will be employed. The Gold Coast will substitute for Los Angeles, showcasing its diverse locations.
"Queensland's reputation as a production hub continues to flourish," said Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek. The state's Production Attraction Strategy played a pivotal role in securing the project.
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney emphasized the production's commitment to fostering emerging talent through its Attachment Program, providing paid on-set training opportunities.
Mark Fasano of Nickel City Pictures praised Queensland's production infrastructure. "The Gold Coast offers a remarkable blend of diverse locations, skilled local crews, and exceptional creatives," said the "Marlowe" producer.
This marks Crowe's return to Queensland after his involvement in "Land of Bad" in late 2022. Additional producers include Jeffrey Greenstein, Deborah Glover, Mark Bower, and Bruno Mustic.
"Bear Country" is supported by the City of Gold Coast and the Australian Government through the Location Offset program.
Recent major productions filmed in Queensland include BBC Studios and Walt Disney's "Bluey," Amazon MGM Studios' "Voltron," and Sony Pictures' "Anaconda."
