Nicole Kidman's Commitment to Female Filmmakers

In 2017, Nicole Kidman vowed to collaborate with a female director every 18 months. This promise has been fulfilled and surpassed: In the past eight years, the Academy Award winner has teamed up with female directors as a producer and/or actor an astonishing 19 times, with more such projects in the pipeline.

Addressing the Double Standard

In a recent interview with Time magazine, Kidman attributed her vow to the double standard faced by women directors. While male directors may receive multiple opportunities despite missteps, women directors often face scrutiny and pressure to deliver flawless films.

"It can be changed," said Kidman. "But it can only be changed by actually being in the films of women."

Recent Collaborations

Kidman's latest theatrical release, "Babygirl," was directed by Halina Reijn. She currently stars in Mimi Cave's thriller "Holland." On the television front, she has worked with Lulu Wang on "Expats" and Susanne Bier on "The Perfect Couple."

Unstoppable Drive

Time magazine attributes Kidman's prolific collaborations with female directors in part to her tireless work ethic. In addition to the aforementioned projects, she stars in "Lioness" on Paramount+ and the second season of Hulu's "Nine Perfect Strangers." She is also preparing for a sequel to "Practical Magic" and the series "Scarpetta" with Jamie Lee Curtis.

Pursuit of Meaning and Legacy

Kidman shared with Variety that her active involvement in the industry is driven by a desire to uplift aspiring filmmakers.

"I can create more work for people," she said. "I can create jobs for people. And also, I love it. I have the passion."

Kidman's unwavering dedication to her craft stems from a lifelong dream. She concludes, "I'm going just give it my all, and then I don't go out. I go home to be with my family. We do things together."
