Ummeed: Indian Psychological Horror Examines Societal Prejudice and the Pursuit of Parenthood
Director Karan Tejpal, known for his award-winning debut "Stolen," has joined the team of the upcoming Indian psychological horror film, "Ummeed" (Hope). Selected for the Berlin European Film Market's Fiction Toolbox Program, the project is scheduled to commence production in November 2025.
"Ummeed" delves into the complex journey of a same-sex couple in rural India grappling with infertility. As they resort to illegal sperm donation, the narrative descends into paranoia fueled by societal stigma and ominous secrets surrounding the pregnancy.
"Despite its atmospheric dread, 'Ummeed' profoundly moved me with its nuanced characters and their fortitude in the face of prejudice," Tejpal expressed. "This is not just a horror film; it's a poignant story of resilience and hope."
The screenplay, penned by Abhishek Banerjee ("Pari," "Paatal Lok"), explores the couple's dream of parenthood transforming into a nightmare as societal pressures push them into a shadowy realm.
Producer Dimpy Agrawal, founder of Gubbara Entertainment, brings her experience from notable Netflix India productions. "This film is deeply personal, highlighting the bravery required to navigate unwelcoming environments as both a woman and a filmmaker," Agrawal stated.
Gubbara recently wrapped production on "Ma," a short film starring Anusuya Sengupta, who made history at Cannes' Un Certain Regard. Directed by Riddhi Talreja, the film explores themes of identity and societal expectations.
"Ummeed" is part of Gubbara's slate showcased at the 2024 Goa Film Bazaar.
