Idina Menzel Soars in New Musical 'Redwood'

Broadway icon Idina Menzel returns to the stage in the exhilarating new musical "Redwood," making her first Broadway appearance since 2014's "If/Then." This time, she takes on a role she co-conceived with Tina Landau, who penned the book.

Set in the majestic Redwood forests of California, "Redwood" follows Jesse, a mother coping with the tragic loss of her son. Seeking solace and a way to confront her grief, she embarks on a journey to escape the bustling city. Along the way, she encounters two arborists who teach her the art of tree climbing.

The central element of the show is the towering Redwood tree that becomes a symbol of Jesse's emotional journey. Menzel and the cast perform daring acrobatic feats, including climbing the tree, swinging from branches, and twirling upside down.

"We had to practice first and learn how to get into harnesses and get certified for climbing," Menzel shared with Variety. "The first time we did it in tech was so much fun. We find it really exhilarating and liberating in the show."

Menzel's portrayal of Jesse is deeply moving and showcases her exceptional vocal and physical abilities. She imbues the character with a raw vulnerability, capturing the complexities of grief, resilience, and the transformative power of nature.

Joining Menzel in the cast are celebrated actors De'Adre Aziza, Khaila Wilcoxon, Michael Park, and Zachary Noah Piser. Together, they deliver powerful performances that are both intimate and awe-inspiring.

With its captivating story, stunning visuals, and unforgettable performances, "Redwood" is a theatrical triumph that celebrates the enduring spirit and the healing embrace of nature.
