Joel Edgerton's Advertising Directorial Debut with Harrison Ford

Renowned filmmaker Joel Edgerton embarks on his first advertising directorial venture with Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky's latest campaign, featuring the legendary Harrison Ford.

The Concept: A Curmudgeon's Tale

Edgerton draws inspiration from Ford's reputation for grumpy authenticity, crafting a campaign titled "Once Upon a Time in Scotland" that playfully explores Ford's character. The ad consists of several video spots that depict Ford as himself, traveling to Andross Castle in Scotland to film the campaign.

Behind the Scenes

Ford resists any action-movie-style stunts, opting instead for meditative moments, cycling, and sipping whisky by the fire. Edgerton describes Ford as a complex figure: "He's rock solid on the outside but very soft in the middle... He has an emotional softness and a sensitivity that he covers with this prickly outside."

Ford's Hero Status

Edgerton expresses his admiration for Ford, recalling his childhood fascination with "Indiana Jones." He emphasizes that Ford's everyman persona made him relatable and endearing to audiences.

Shooting with a Legend

Edgerton recounts their initial encounter: "He shook my hand and said, 'I heard they want me to ride a horse and fly a plane, and I'm not doing any of that.'" Ford's willingness to embrace the campaign's unconventional approach impressed Edgerton.

The Challenge of Directing Ford

Despite his initial trepidation, Edgerton found Ford to be an exceptionally cooperative collaborator. Ford's readiness and adaptability made the intensive three-day shoot less stressful.

The Kilt and the Bedhead

Edgerton embraces the natural aging process, rejecting artificial age-reduction or beautification techniques common in advertising. "Harrison is an older dude. Let's not try and hide it," he says. The actor's unstyled hair symbolizes honesty and authenticity.

Whisky and Camaraderie

The team shared several whisky tastings to gain a deeper understanding of the product. "It is important to know your product," says Edgerton. The crew also received commemorative bottles of whisky, including a vintage edition from Ford's birth year.

Edgerton's Serendipitous Role in "Bluey"

Edgerton's connection to Australia led to his voiceover role as Policeman in the animated series "Bluey." His niece's obsession with the show sparked his involvement, and it has become a beloved pastime for his children as well.
