Variety & Audible's Cocktails and Conversations Panel at Sundance 2025

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival's Variety & Audible Cocktails and Conversations panel featured a discussion on modern storytelling with journalist Ronan Farrow, Audible's chief content officer Rachel Ghiazza, and actors Juliette Lewis, André Holland, and Mamoudou Athie, moderated by Variety Executive Editor Brent Lang.

Long-Form Storytelling

Farrow emphasized the importance of long-form storytelling, urging creators to embrace the time it takes to craft compelling narratives. "It's imperiled to invest in stories that take years to tell, but complicated projects sometimes demand it. Finding people who believe in both the story and its shape is rare."

Emotional Connection

Lewis highlighted the impact of emotionally resonant stories, regardless of the medium. "It's the emotional connection that moves me. I want to be stirred or have my beliefs questioned. Mystery and unexplained elements engage me in all forms of entertainment, whether it's podcasts, music, or movies."

Community and Storytelling

Holland cited indie filmmaker Steven Soderbergh's influence on his approach to storytelling. "He taught me efficiency and community. His films often involve the same team, fostering a collaborative environment. It instills optimism and inspires collective creativity."

Audible's Content Strategy

Ghiazza explained Audible's focus on supporting artists who take risks and create original works. "We aim to create something distinct and impactful. We collaborate with individuals who are pushing boundaries. Our format allows us the time to nurture projects and let them develop organically."
