Captain America: Brave New World Opens Strong at the Box Office

Los Angeles, CA - February 21, 2023 - Captain America: Brave New World took the box office by storm, raking in an impressive $88.5 million in its debut weekend. With a projected *Presidents Day* weekend total of $100 million, the film ranks as the year's biggest opening weekend.

The 35th installment of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) marks the biggest Presidents Day launch since 2018's Black Panther. Despite mixed reviews and audience reactions, the film has exceeded expectations, ranking among the top-earning MCU debuts.

Starring Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America and directed by Julius Onah, the film finds Sam Wilson facing an international crisis after the presidential election of Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).

Overseas, Captain America: Brave New World has also made a strong showing, grossing $92.4 million, bringing its global total to $192.4 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior Comscore analyst, notes that this is the first blockbuster weekend of 2025. While the film's critical reception remains mixed, its strong debut suggests a promising box office run.

Sony's Paddington in Peru opened in second place with $13 million over the weekend, charmed by its critics and audiences with its wholesome family appeal.

Other notable performers include Heart Eyes, which enjoyed a Valentine's Day boost, and Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man, which remains a family favorite. Rounding out the top five is the Chinese-language animated film Ne Zha 2, which continues to dominate the Middle Kingdom box office.
