David Tennant Hosts BAFTAs, Takes Aim at Trump and Celebrates Cinematic Architecture

David Tennant returned as host of the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, opening the ceremony with a humorous performance of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" and showcasing the impressive architecture of "The Brutalist."

Tennant's Monologue Targets Trump

In his opening monologue, Tennant jokingly compared the daring architectural design of "The Brutalist" to "Donald Trump's hair" in "The Apprentice," stating that it was the "boldest architecture in film this year." He playfully expressed concern that his repeated mention of Trump's name might summon him, likening the situation to the fictional character Beetlejuice.

Praise for "Conclave" and Stanley Tucci

Tennant praised "Conclave," a film about the behind-the-scenes machinations of choosing a new pope, for its depiction of the tension between conservative and progressive candidates and the importance of diversity. He singled out Stanley Tucci's performance as Cardinal Bellini, noting Tucci's culinary expertise: "If anyone knows how to whip up an excellent Bellini...."

Special Performances

The 2025 BAFTAs featured performances from Take That, Jeff Goldblum, and others. Take That performed their hit song "Greatest Day" from the opening scene of "Anora," while Goldblum played the piano during the in memoriam section.

Nomination Leaders

Edward Berger's "Conclave" led the nominations with 12, followed by "Emilia Perez" with 11. "The Brutalist," "Anora," "Dune: Part Two," and "Wicked" earned seven nominations each, while "A Complete Unknown" and "Kneecap" received six nominations.
