Anthony Mackie's Captain America Sheds the Half-Helmet in 'Brave New World'

Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson has shed the half-helmet and goggles he wore as Captain America in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" for his latest outing in "Captain America: Brave New World."

Mackie himself was responsible for the costume change, having expressed his dissatisfaction with the previous design. "I told them that I was never wearing that shit again, dude," he said. "It was impossible. You can't do anything."

While the iconic goggles remain, the half-helmet is gone, marking the first Marvel movie to feature Mackie in the lead role. Mackie joined the MCU in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014), and took up the mantle of Captain America from Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in "Avengers: Endgame" (2019).

"Brave New World" director Julius Onah emphasizes that the film focuses on Sam's journey as an established Captain America. "That question has been resolved," Onah said. "Sam is our Captain America now. He's our hero."

The film also introduces new characters, with Harrison Ford taking over the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from the late William Hurt. Danny Ramirez plays the new Falcon, Shira Haas portrays Sabra, and Giancarlo Esposito appears as the villain Sidewinder.

"Captain America: Brave New World" premieres in theaters on February 14, 2023.
