Angel City FC Hires Carmen Bona as President of Business Operations, Promotes Julie Uhrman to CEO

Angel City FC, the most valuable women's sports team in the U.S., has appointed Carmen Bona as its President of Business Operations in a newly created role. The club has also elevated co-founder and President Julie Uhrman to CEO ahead of the 2025 season.

Bona, previously Chief Strategy and Corporate Development Officer at United Talent Agency, will oversee day-to-day business operations for Angel City FC, which was recently acquired by Willow Bay and Bob Iger for $250 million.

In her first year on the job, Bona will focus on evaluating existing revenue streams and cost structures to improve operational efficiency. She aims to transition the club from a "startup mode" to a global powerhouse while maintaining financial prudence.

Angel City FC's strong foundation in the Los Angeles market and its revenue generation capacity position it for success, Bona believes. As a Spaniard with an international perspective, she sees opportunities for U.S. clubs to gain traction abroad by developing their marketing and revenue strategies.

The NWSL's broadcast rights package with CBS, ESPN, Amazon's Prime Video, and Ion represents significant progress for the league. In contrast, the Women's Super League in England has a less lucrative domestic TV deal with Sky Sports and the BBC.

Many American clubs have leveraged social media to elevate the personalities of their stars and collaborate with influencers to expand their reach. The NWSL's new collective bargaining agreement, which eliminates the amateur draft, underscores the importance of state-of-the-art facilities and fan engagement in recruiting elite talent.

Angel City FC's recent opening of a nine-acre performance center demonstrates its commitment to player infrastructure. The club also boasts well-known players like the Thompson sisters, who have inked major sponsorship deals and can serve as role models for aspiring athletes.

Nearly three-quarters of the current U.S. women's national team squad plays for NWSL clubs, highlighting the league's impact on the development of world-class talent.

"Angel City has been one of the green shoots in that regard," Bona said of the NWSL's success. "The league has done a lot of things right."
