Village Rockstars 2: Bangkok-based Diversion Acquires Global Sales Rights
Bangkok-based Diversion has secured the worldwide sales rights for "Village Rockstars 2," the highly acclaimed sequel from Indian filmmaker Rima Das. The film will make its European premiere at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival.
About the Film
"Village Rockstars 2" is a follow-up to Das's 2017 festival hit "Village Rockstars." The original film captivated audiences with its heartwarming story of 10-year-old Dhunu's determination to form a rock band in her remote village. It garnered critical acclaim, winning numerous awards, including Best Film at the National Film Awards of India.
Years later, "Village Rockstars 2" brings us back to Dhunu's life as a teenager, navigating the challenges of adulthood while holding onto her childhood dreams. The film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in 2024, where it received the Kim Jiseok Award. It will now make its European premiere in the Berlinale's Generation 14plus Competition.
Production and Distribution
"Village Rockstars 2" is a testament to Rima Das's exceptional filmmaking skills, as she wrote, directed, produced, shot, and edited the film herself. It is a collaborative effort with co-producers Fran Borgia, Jaya Das, Yao Chen, and Cao Yu, representing Flying River Films, Akanga Film Asia, and Bad Rabbit Pictures. The cast includes Bhanita Das, Basanti Das, and Manabendra Das, among others.
Diversion's acquisition of "Village Rockstars 2" reinforces their commitment to supporting independent and arthouse films. Their current slate includes several women-led projects, including "I, The Song" by Bhutanese filmmaker Dechen Roder, "Second Chance" by India's Subhadra Mahajan, and "A Journey in Spring" by Taiwanese directors Wang Ping-Wen and Peng Tzu-Hui.
Rima Das expressed her excitement about the partnership with Diversion, stating, "This collaboration is particularly meaningful, as Diversion shares our vision for independent filmmaking."
