Sony Pictures Seeks to Take Over Full Distribution of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy"

Sony Pictures TV plans to assume full distribution responsibilities for "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" as early as next week. The decision follows a legal battle with CBS, their long-standing partner for the syndicated game shows.

Distribution Takeover Notice

Sony formally notified CBS on February 3rd of its intent to handle distribution within the week. The company aims to ensure the delivery of new episodes to over 200 TV stations nationwide. Distribution will commence starting with episodes scheduled to air on February 10th.

Amended Lawsuit

Sony has also amended its lawsuit against CBS, alleging unpaid distribution fees and overstepping of boundaries in licensing deals for international markets. The initial suit was filed in October, with CBS countersuing in November.

Impact of Loss of Nielsen Data

Sony's amended complaint criticizes CBS for terminating its contract with Nielsen, claiming it has negatively impacted the profitability of "Wheel" and "Jeopardy." The lack of ratings data reportedly complicates advertising sales. Sony asserts this has resulted in lost commitments from major advertisers such as Procter & Gamble.

CBS Response and Disney's Potential Involvement

CBS has not yet commented on Sony's distribution takeover plan. The dispute could potentially affect Disney-owned ABC stations, which are top affiliates of the game shows. Sony manages production, while CBS handles syndication, advertising sales, and distribution.

Sony's Request for Information

Sony has requested CBS provide all domestic and international licensing agreements and advertising contracts related to the shows.
