Shogun Season 2: Release Date and Casting Updates

"Shogun" star Hiroyuki Sanada has shared that Season 2 of the Emmy-winning FX series could commence filming as early as autumn this year.

"We're targeting this fall, and the writers' room is working diligently right now," Sanada revealed to Variety at AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles. "We'll retain approximately half of the cast from Season 1 and introduce a new cast as well. We're currently assembling the optimal crew for the upcoming season, which is thrilling."

While "Shogun" Season 2 has not yet received an official green light from FX, both on-screen and behind-the-scenes talent have offered glimpses into what the 17th-century drama holds. In January, creator and executive producer Rachel Kondo indicated that development on the new season was ongoing but declined to provide further details.

"We're still striving, we haven't abandoned the project, but we're unsure what we can disclose," she stated. Justin Marks, Kondo's spouse and co-creator of "Shogun," added, "We're roughly six weeks away from concluding the writers' room."

In October, Marks signed a comprehensive TV deal with FX, under which he will create new projects for the network, including potential additional seasons of "Shogun" alongside Kondo, developed in collaboration with Clavell's estate.

At the Golden Globes this year, "Shogun" received four honors, including best television series and best lead actor in a TV drama for Sanada. The series also triumphed at the 2024 Emmys, earning a record-breaking 18 awards for a single season of a television series.
