Red Stars Upon the Field Secures International Sales Rights with The Playmaker

The Playmaker has acquired international sales rights for "Red Stars Upon the Field," the feature debut from writer-director Laura Laabs.

Following its world premiere at the Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis in Germany, the film will make its international debut at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The Playmaker will present the film for international sales at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Intriguing Historical Mystery

"Red Stars Upon the Field" revolves around the discovery of a skeleton buried in an East German moor, igniting curiosity and speculation among the locals. The identity of the skeleton remains an enigma, with possible connections to a World War II deserter, a farmer from the communist era, or a secret agent from the infamous Red Army Faction. As the historical mystery unfolds, it unveils a century of Germany's past.

Critical Acclaim and Impressive Collaborations

Moritz Hemminger, The Playmaker's Head of Sales and Acquisitions, praised the film's originality, stating that it "combines pivotal moments in German history with a captivating whodunnit."

Producers Balthasar Busmann and Maxi Haslberger of Amerikafilm hailed "Red Stars Upon the Field" as "powerful cinema" with stunning visuals and a compelling narrative, highlighting its relevance amidst Germany's upcoming elections.

The film was co-produced by ZDF/Arte, WDR, and SR, with support from various funding organizations. Farbfilm Verleih serves as the local theatrical distributor.

Promising Director

Laura Laabs' previous works include the documentary "Spinach & Sugar," which explored her Jewish grandmother's life, earning an award for innovation at Visions du Réel. Her film "Volksbühne" won an emerging talent award at the Biennale of the Moving Image.
