A landmark France-Kyrgyzstan co-production, "Kurak" marks the first such collaboration in two decades. It also stands as the largest Central Asian co-production to date. Co-directed by Erke Dzhumakmatova and Emil Atageldiev, the film incorporates real-world footage to enhance its authenticity.

Sales Rights

Philippines-based Fire and Ice Media has acquired the Asian sales rights for "Kurak." The company will introduce the film to buyers at the prestigious European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

Background

"Kurak" gained momentum through the 2024 Cannes Film Festival's Central Asian Co-production Workshop, supported by CNC and the Eurasian Film Market. The multinational production boasts an impressive roster of producers from Switzerland, France, Serbia, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy.

Studio Oymo (Kyrgyzstan) spearheads the project, with key producers from KBP (Switzerland), Spirito Libero (France/Serbia), Human Films (Netherlands), and Deal Productions (Luxembourg). Erzhan Arakeev is responsible for cinematography, while Svetlana Dubina serves as production designer.

Fire and Ice Media CEO Liza Diño hailed "Kurak" as a "necessary and powerful film" that amplifies marginalized voices. The film has secured support from Kyrgyzstan's Department of Cinematography and the Central Swiss Film Specialist Group IFFG.
