Oscar Nominee Apologizes Amidst Past Racist Posts Controversy, Hopes Silence Will Allow Appreciation of Film

As Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón faces ongoing criticism for her previously surfaced racist internet posts, the "Emilia Pérez" star has released a new apology, stating her hope that her "silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference." This statement follows a disavowal by Gascón's director, Jacques Audiard, who expressed his lack of communication with her and described her actions as "self-destructive."

In an Instagram post on Thursday, Gascón expressed her understanding of Audiard's interview and her decision to let the film speak for itself. She apologized to those hurt by her past actions, writing, "I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way."

Despite her previous approach, Gascón's "silence" has not been the primary strategy in addressing the controversy. Culture writer Sarah Hagi had uncovered offensive posts made by the actress in recent years, including anti-Muslim hate speech and racist remarks.

Amidst the growing backlash, Gascón participated in a CNN en Español interview without consulting Netflix or The Lede Company, which had been involved in the film's awards campaign. Variety reported that Netflix is no longer covering her travel and styling expenses for awards shows.

Audiard, in an interview with Deadline, stated that he had not spoken to Gascón and found her actions self-destructive and confusing.

"Emilia Pérez" holds the most nominations at this year's Oscars, with 13 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Audiard, and Best Actress for both Gascón and Zoe Saldaña.
