Denis Villeneuve Snubbed Again for "Dune: Part Two" Best Director Nomination

Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed director behind "Dune: Part Two," has been surprisingly omitted from the Academy Awards' Best Director race. This marks the second time Villeneuve has been overlooked for his work on the "Dune" franchise, as he was also snubbed for the first film in 2022.

Despite earning 10 Oscar nominations for "Dune," including cinematography, production design, and sound, the sequel received a mere 5 nominations this year. This has baffled many, including actor Josh Brolin, who stars as Gurney Halleck in both films.

In an Instagram story, Brolin expressed his disappointment: "Just want to say congratulations on the 'Dune' best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser on cinematography, for best visual effects, for Patrice [Vermett] on production design and for sound." He went on to state his disbelief at Villeneuve's snub, calling it "amazing" and "even better than the first one."

Other industry professionals have also voiced their support for Villeneuve. "Spider-Verse" producer Chris Miller wrote on Twitter: "There were many films that had great directing this year but what Denis did — in all aspects of the craft — was masterful."

Villeneuve may have a third chance for a Best Director nomination with "Dune Messiah," the planned concluding installment of his trilogy. His last nomination in the category was for "Arrival."
