NAACP Image Awards to Honor Former Vice President Kamala Harris with Chairman's Award
In a pivotal moment during the upcoming 56th NAACP Image Awards, former Vice President Kamala Harris will be bestowed with the prestigious Chairman's Award. The ceremony, set to be broadcast live on February 22nd at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on BET and CBS, will witness Harris accepting this esteemed honor in her first televised appearance since leaving office.
Established to recognize individuals who excel in public service and harness their platforms to create meaningful change, the Chairman's Award is a testament to Harris' exceptional career. Born in Oakland, she made history as the first woman, Black American, and South Asian American to serve as U.S. Vice President alongside President Joe Biden. Additionally, her historic presidential campaign in 2024 saw her become the first Black and South Asian woman nominated by a major party.

We are deeply honored to present her with the Chairman's Award at this year's NAACP Image Awards, celebrating her relentless advocacy for justice, equality, and the betterment of our society," said Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors. "Her legacy is a beacon of hope and progress, built on courage, compassion, and a profound commitment to uplifting the marginalized."
Previous recipients of the Chairman's Award include notable figures such as Amanda Gorman, Samuel L. Jackson, the late Congressman John Lewis, Ruby Dee, Danny Glover, Barack Obama, and Maxine Waters.
Scott Mills, president and CEO of BET Media Group, expressed admiration for Harris, stating that she is "deserving of this award for both her historic accomplishments and her unwavering commitment to serving America and our community." He emphasized the privilege of honoring her alongside the NAACP, acknowledging her transformative journey and the inspiration she provides.

This year's Image Awards will also celebrate other extraordinary figures, including comedian Dave Chappelle, who will receive the NAACP President's Award, and the Wayans family, who will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be extended by 30 minutes to two and a half hours, incorporating a segment to support communities affected by recent wildfires.
