FCC Investigating Comcast and NBCUniversal Over Alleged DEI Discrimination

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has initiated an investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal for potential violations of civil rights laws and FCC regulations related to the implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies.

In a letter to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, Carr expressed concerns that the company's DEI initiatives may "promote invidious forms of DEI that do not comply with FCC regulations." He noted that the FCC has "condemned" such practices, which "stigmatize individuals by reason of a group identity" and violate the principles of equality enshrined in the Communications Act.

Comcast has stated that promoting DEI is a "core value" and maintains an extensive DEI infrastructure that includes training, initiatives, and employee resource groups. The investigation will examine the impact of these programs on the company's operations and compliance with FCC regulations.

Carr further emphasized the FCC's commitment to ensuring that companies under its jurisdiction comply with civil rights protections. He believes that the investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal will assist in uncovering any instances of discriminatory DEI practices across the sectors regulated by the FCC.

Comcast spokesperson Sena Fitzmaurice has confirmed receipt of the inquiry and stated that the company will cooperate with the investigation. She emphasized Comcast's longstanding commitment to integrity and respect for its employees and customers.

This investigation comes amidst a broader trend of companies scaling back or eliminating DEI initiatives in response to political and legal challenges. Under Chairman Carr, the FCC has also taken aim at alleged media bias and is investigating CBS News for alleged "news distortion."
