Spider-Man Voice Actor Initially Concerned About Show Being 'Annoying and Woke,' But Was Pleasantly Surprised

Hudson Thames, who voices the titular web-slinger in the upcoming Disney+ show "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," expressed his initial worries about the series being "annoying and woke."

In an interview with Collider, Thames revealed that he feared the show would be overly preachy and focused on social justice issues. However, after reading the script, he was impressed by how well-written and engaging it was.

"I thought it was awesome," Thames said. "My biggest fear was that it was going to be annoying and woke, but it wasn't. It feels real and relatable, especially to high school students."

"Woke" has become a term used to describe individuals who actively support and promote social justice causes. However, it has also been criticized by those who see it as an attempt to enforce political correctness.

Disney, in particular, has faced criticism from conservative groups for allegedly promoting "woke" messages in its content. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida and former President Donald Trump have both publicly criticized the company.

Alongside Thames, "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" features a star-studded cast, including Colman Domingo, Kari Wahlgren, Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Jeff Trammell is the head writer, while Mel Zwyer serves as the supervising director. Executive producers include Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, and Trammell.
