David Johansen of the New York Dolls Seeks Financial Aid Amidst Cancer and Injury

Legendary musician David Johansen, the sole surviving founding member of the New York Dolls, has revealed his battle with stage four cancer, a brain tumor, and a broken back. Faced with overwhelming medical expenses, Johansen has established the David Johansen Fund with Sweet Relief Musicians Fund to solicit financial support.

Diagnosed in 2020, Johansen's initial hopes of keeping his illness private have shifted due to the severe financial burden. He suffered a fall in November 2024, resulting in two broken vertebrae that required surgery. Despite the procedure's success, Johansen remains bedridden and incapacitated.

Sweet Relief is providing invaluable assistance to the Johansen family. Immediate needs include full-time nursing, physical therapy, and funds for essential living expenses. Additionally, a special Johansen T-shirt is available, with all proceeds benefiting his treatment.

Since its inception in 1994, Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has offered financial aid and support to musicians and music industry professionals. Aric Steinberg, Executive Director of Sweet Relief, emphasizes the importance of the community's support: "David's influence on the musical landscape with the New York Dolls is indelible. We're here to help him back up."

Johansen's daughter, Leah Hennessey, expresses the family's gratitude: "With professional care, we hope David can regain some mobility and independence."

Johansen's legacy as a musician, actor, and artist has touched countless lives. His recent appearance in the documentary "Personality Crisis: One Night Only" showcased his enduring talent.

Contributions to the David Johansen Fund will ease the financial burden and provide essential support for his recovery journey.
