Twelve Years After "The Man of the Crowd," Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimarães Reunite for "Cape of Pleasures"

Acclaimed director Marcelo Gomes ("Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures") and filmmaker Cao Guimarães ("From the Window of My Room") have joined forces once again for "Cape of Pleasures," a dystopian thriller that explores the complexities of aging in a society obsessed with eternal youth.

Synopsis

Set in a near-future Brazil, "Cape of Pleasures" portrays a totalitarian regime that confines the elderly to residences where their memories are extracted to train an AI system. Horrified by this dystopian reality, a man escapes and joins a guerrilla cell led by dissidents over 75.

Inspiration

Gomes and Guimarães were inspired by the rise of far-right groups and their approach to aging, which they saw as unproductive. They wanted to challenge the portrayal of the elderly as helpless and instead depict them as a source of rebellion and resistance.

Casting and Funding

Chilean actor Alfredo Castro ("Vermiglio") will star in the lead role of Nelson. Gomes has secured 80% of the film's budget and is seeking a third co-producing country in Europe to enhance its international reach and post-production capabilities.

Significance

"Cape of Pleasures" highlights the urgent issue of ageism and its potential consequences in a society driven by productivity and youth. It follows in the footsteps of Gomes's previous collaboration with Guimarães, "The Man of the Crowd," which explored loneliness in urban environments.
