Cannibalistic Crime Drama "The Soap Maker" in the Works by French Auteur Claire Denis

Berlin EFM

Acclaimed French director Claire Denis is poised to helm "The Soap Maker," a cannibalistic crime drama set for production.

Inspiration and Remake

The film is an updated remake of Mauro Bolognini's 1977 cult classic "Gran Bollito," which featured Shelley Winters as a serial killer who disposed of victims' bodies through macabre methods.

Real-Life Story

"The Soap Maker" draws inspiration from the chilling true tale of Leonarda Cianciulli, who murdered and dismembered three women in Italy in the late 1930s - early 1940s. Cianciulli used their remains to create soap, candles, cakes, and cookies.

Elevated Crime Drama

The producers describe the film as an elevated real crime drama in the vein of renowned psychological thrillers such as "Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven." It promises a dark and haunting atmosphere.

Production Details

Gerry Pass (Chrome Entertainment) leads the production with CAA packaging the project. The plan is to shoot the film in Italy.

Authenticity and Ritualism

The producers hold rights to both Bolognini's "Gran Bollito" screenplay and Cianciulli's alleged asylum diary. The film will accurately incorporate the witchcraft rituals Cianciulli employed to lure her victims.

Acclaimed Director

Claire Denis boasts a distinguished filmography including "Beau Travail," "Trouble Every Day," "35 Rhums," "Both Sides of the Blade," and "Stars at Noon."

Upcoming Projects

Denis is currently preparing to shoot "The Cry of the Guards" with Tom Blyth, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Matt Dillon, and Isaach De Bankolé.

Additional Producers

Joining Pass in the production team are Lucas Foster ("Ford v Ferrari") and Salvatore Sclafani ("The Hermit").
