Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series Nears Hulu Pilot Order

In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is in talks to reprise her iconic role as the title character in an untitled "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel series at Hulu. While Gellar will appear in a recurring role, the focus will be on a new Slayer.

Nora and Lila Zuckerman will write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar will also executive produce alongside Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original "Buffy" series.

20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.

Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is notably absent from the creative team. Whedon has faced allegations of workplace misconduct on "Buffy" and its spinoff "Angel."

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" originated as a film starring Kristy Swanson in 1992. The television series debuted in 1997 and aired for seven seasons. It starred Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, and James Marsters.

The series has been a cult hit and influential in popularizing ongoing story arcs on television. It is often cited as one of the best television shows of all time.

Gellar has previously starred in "Dexter: Original Sin," "Wolf Pack," "The Crazy Ones," "Ringer," "Cruel Intentions," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and the "Scooby Doo" movies.

The Zuckermans were showrunners on "Poker Face" and have previously worked on "Prodigal Son," "Fringe," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D," "Suits," and "Haven."

Zhao received four Oscar nominations for her 2020 film "Nomadland," winning Best Picture and Best Director. She has also directed "The Rider," "Songs My Brother Taught Me," and "Eternals."
