Will Smith and 'Hitch' Director Andy Tennant Clashed Over Movie's Direction

Andy Tennant, director of the romantic comedy "Hitch," recently reflected on his challenging relationship with star Will Smith during the development of the film.

Creative Differences and Studio Pressure

Tennant shared that he and Smith had different visions for the movie, leading to creative conflicts. "I didn't want cheap jokes, but he didn't trust me," said Tennant. The tension reached a climax when Smith brought in a draft that Tennant strongly opposed. "I was afraid of Will making that version of the movie than the studio firing me," Tennant revealed.

Despite the studio's concerns, Tennant stood his ground and refused to use Smith's draft. "I don't think I was ever in anyone's favor," he admitted.

Box Office Success and Sequel Plans

Despite the clashes, "Hitch" became a critical and commercial success. Tennant proposed a sequel, but it never materialized. To Tennant's surprise, he recently learned that Smith is developing a "Hitch" sequel without his involvement. "I guess that's Hollywood," he said.

Aftermath and Relationships

Tennant states that he holds no ill will towards Smith. "He hired me to make this movie. It wasn't an easy job, but we went around the world with it," he said. However, their professional relationship ended after the film's release. "My time with Will was over. That was it. I have never heard from him since," Tennant added.
