International Sales Rights Acquired for Indian Supernatural Horror "Bokshi"

Alief, a French-U.K. outfit, has secured the international sales rights to "Bokshi," a supernatural folk horror film by Indian filmmaker Bhargav Saikia, ahead of its world premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam's Harbour section.

Synopsis:

"Bokshi" follows Anahita, a troubled teenager who finds solace in Shalini, a mysterious history teacher leading a trek to an ancient site known as "The Navel." As the group ventures deeper, eerie connections emerge between the site and a cult worshipping Bokshi, a feared folkloric demoness.

Unique Perspective:

Departing from the recent trend of horror-comedy in India, "Bokshi" presents a darker, more atmospheric approach to the genre. Saikia explains, "It's a cautionary tale about women empowerment and humanity's relationship with Mother Earth, subverting the negative stereotype of witches and presenting them as symbols of female empowerment."

Ambitious Production:

Shot over 80 days in remote Himalayan locations during winter, "Bokshi" faced numerous logistical challenges. Saikia emphasizes, "We filmed in dense forests of Sikkim, with a crew of over 100, using every technical resource to create an authentic experience."

International Appeal:

Featuring dialogue in Hindi, English, Nepali, and a constructed language, "Bokshi" has garnered global interest. Saikia notes, "We're excited to see how the film resonates with audiences in Nepal and abroad, particularly the young adult segment."

Sales and Distribution:

Alief will showcase "Bokshi" to buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, where they will also present other titles such as "Mongrels," "Horizonte," and "Edge of Summer."

Festival Premiere:

"Bokshi" will make its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, running from January 30th to February 9th, 2023.
